Nobody plans for an accident, but a short checklist keeps a bad day from getting worse. Save this page or screenshot it for the glovebox.
At the scene
- Move to a safe spot if the vehicles are drivable and no one is injured.
- Call 911 if there are injuries, blocked lanes, or disputed fault.
- Photograph every angle of both vehicles, license plates, and the surrounding scene.
- Exchange insurance, license, and contact info — no discussion of fault.
- Get names and phone numbers of any witnesses before they leave.
Within 24 hours
- Open a claim with your own insurer, even if the other driver was at fault.
- Write down the claim number and adjuster's direct line.
- Ask whether your policy includes rental coverage and for how many days.
- Do not authorize repairs at a shop chosen by the other driver's insurance without checking it first.
Choosing your body shop
In Washington, you have the right to pick your own repair shop — insurance companies can recommend, but they cannot require. Call the shop directly, describe the damage, and ask about their process, warranty, and typical turnaround. A good shop will happily walk you through everything before you commit.
